Session C2 & D2: Planning with the End in Mind
(C2: Science Focus; D2: Social Studies Focus)

Facilitator: Julie Cordova

Location: Room 110

As designers of learning, our instinct is often to start with a great learning activity that we know will really highlight a specific topic or skill. However, without clearly stated sets of learning goals (for students) and assessment strategies that help us understand whether or not students have reached these learning goals, and without a clear understanding of the knowledge students have coming prior to instruction, the activities themselves will likely be disconnected to each other and to learners’ prior knowledge, and therefore not likely to lead to robust learning for students. If we want students to demonstrate understanding with these learning intentions, then the assessments and instruction they receive and activities required to complete must be designed to lead them to this end.

Please join some of your like-minded colleagues for an hour of collaborative talk time related to ‘backwards planning’ or ‘planning with the end in mind.’ We will explore the planning process as well various resources, samples and supports that may help you with this work moving forward.

Session C5 & D5: Unexpeccted Surprises: Stories From The Classroom As Reflective Practice

Facilitator: Greg Chomichuk

@gmbchomichuk (twitter and instagram)

Location: Room 215

The digital age seems intent to put everything we do up on the world stage. Letting the world into your classroom can seem both intimidating and attention-seeking. As classroom teachers we are used to the safe confines of our four walls, focused on the needs of the present students. Why should we be interested or motivated to allow our day-to-day activity to be accessible to unexpected audiences?

I will share the process I took to build and grow a simple culture of sharing beyond the classroom and display some of the unexpected and wonderful results. I'll also address some of the legal, ethical and personal concerns with "living online". I hope to show you that many of the concerns about digital culture are founded in fearful misconceptions, and that the real-world classroom applications of technology are an incredible tool that is easy to use and full of positive if unexpected, surprises.
